Statue of Liberty to reopen this year
2004 sees statue reopen

The US National Park Service has announced its intention to reopen The Statue of Liberty in New York by the end of 2004. The monument has been closed since 11 September 2001 because of security concerns. The organisation is raising $5 million to improve security at the site. American Express has pledged $3 million and commissioned film director Martin Scorcese to make a documentary about the 117-year-old statue.
