Successful auction of the contents of Reendesert Lodge at Bantry House, Co Cork.
The auction of the contents of Reendesert Lodge which was held in the stately surroundings of Bantry House continued to underpin Loughlin Bowe's reputation as one of Irelands most innovative and leading Antique & Fine Art auctioneers. The viewing was held over two wonderful sunny days at Reendesert Lodge on the shores of Bantry Bay. The viewing was marked by the large number of people who flooded in the driveway from the time the gates opened. The house was full to capacity during the viewing and judging from the good natured chat and laughter which echoed throughout the house, everyone seemed to enjoy the ambience and conviviality of this house which was the former home of the late Mrs Cynthia Kilroy, the auction also included selected items from Dame J Neuberger D.B.E.
The auction day in Bantry house continued the trend and every seat was filled prior to the beginning of the auction. Bidding during the auction was spirited at times with bidders in the room doing battle with the various absentee telephone and commission bidders, none more so than for a watercolor by Irish artist Harry Kernoff, which against an estimate of €5,000-8,000 fetched an eventual total figure of €18,300, proving that the market demand for works by Irish artists is still very strong. Showing improvement on last year, purchasers of furniture and rugs proved more active than before, possibly in anticipatition of the projected forthcoming recovery in prices within this area, bidders continued to be selective but canny investors still seem ever ready to take advantage of any current value that presents itself in this area. Overall this 600 lot auction was a tremendous success and no doubt all of the bidders who attended this event will return on the next occasion.
